Measure strain gauge circuits
In order to measure strain with a bonded resistance strain gauge, it must be connected to a circuit so that small resistance changes corresponding to the strain can be measured. A strain gauge sensor typically contains four strain gauge elements that are electrically connected to form a Wheatstone bridge circuit. Figure 1 shows a typical strain gauge diagram. A Wheatstone bridge is a disconnected bridge-like circuit that can be used to measure static or dynamic resistance. The output voltage of Wheatstone bridge is in the form of millivolts per volt of input voltage. Wheatstone Bridges are also well suited for temperature compensation applications. The number of effective strain gauges required in a bridge depends on the application. For example, it is a practical design to connect two strain gauges that measure compressive strain and tensile strain on each side of a curved beam. This design can double the bridge voltage of the same strain output. In a bridge with strain gauges on all four arms, the temperature effect can be compensated automatically. This is because temperature-induced resistance changes act on all four arms of the bridge at the same time.
