Optical strain gauges are designed to make fiber handling easier and sensor installation fast and repeatable. Its stainless steel carrier allows the FBG to maintain tension and protect the fiber during installation. Since there is no epoxy resin to fix the fibers to the carrier, long-term stability is ensured by design. For temperature compensation, it can be connected in series with os4100, FBG temperature compensation meter or os4350, FBG temperature sensor.
Two mounting options are available for welding or epoxy adhesion to the structural surface. The installation time takes only a few minutes to complete the welding and can be used immediately after the connection. Similar to electronic foil strain gauges, epoxy meters typically cure in less than 24 hours at room temperature.
Compared side-by-side with foil strain gauges, it is equally sensitive and accurate, while providing a greater strain range and more than 100 times fatigue life. Strain gauges are suitable for harsh environments and offer many of the benefits inherent in all FBG sensors. The sensor can be used alone or in series as part of an FBG sensor array. Such arrays are cheaper and more cumbersome to install and wire than comparable networks of electronic gauges. Multiple optical strain gauges can be arranged near 0,45 and 90 degrees for strain wreath measurement.
